Cape Town
28th December

We’ve been in Cape Town for the last 6 days.   We’re staying in a really nice house in a place called Kenilworth.   The flight down here was a bit of a mare.   The first flight was delayed by 2 hours due to some idiots trying to get fireworks onto the plane.   This meant that we missed our connecting flight from Jo’burg to CT.   Because we basically don’t live in the real world we hadn’t really appreciated that it was only 3 days before xmas and so when we arrived in Jo’burg the airport was absolutely rammed.   When we explained that we’d missed our flight the first thing that the guy said was that we’d probably have to spend the night at the airport because all flights were full.   Luckily he managed to get us on a flight a couple of hours later though.   Feeling very pleased with ourselves we boarded the flight, only to be told that the black box was broken and we couldn’t take off until it was fixed.   This took about 3 hours.   All in all it meant that instead of arriving in CT at 17.00 we got in at 2300!   We were supposed to be going out for dinner with the family but because it was so late we had to eat at the airport restaurant instead!   Anyway, it was great to see the family and catch up on what everyone has been doing.

The few days before xmas were spent exploring CT and going to lots of nice restaurants.   The most notable thing that happened was that my brother managed to get himself run over whilst crossing the road.   Luckily he’s brain dead anyway and made of rubber so he bounced up the road and wasn’t hurt.   Although if he was a cat he would have lost about 8.99 of his 9 lives!

Xmas was spent a lovely hotel called the Vineyard in CT.   all very posh, which meant that Amy an I both had to go into CT and do some shopping to buy some smart clothes!   I even had to buy shoes.   We had a great lunch and drunk lots of wine and then headed back to the house.

My sister and her family flew out yesterday and my brothers flew home today.   Today is my birthday ad so we went out for drive to Camps Bay and then onto a place called the Fig Tree for lunch.   Again it was all very nice but seeing as we’d had quite a boozy bbq the night before I think everyone was feeling a little jaded!

3rd January

For New Year we went to a seriously posh vineyard / hotel in Stellenbosch.   My sister’s room / house had its own pool.   Amy and my room was bigger than our flat at home!   The dinner we had started off very well.   However, for one reason or another the service was unbelievably slow.   We started our dinner at 8pm and by midnight we still hadn’t been served our main meal.   So we decided to sack the meal off and head to the bar where we boozed until about 2.30.   The upshot of having no dinner and lots of champagne was that the next day was a rather delicate one!   The most productive thing we did that day was go to a place called Spier.   This is kind of animal park and picnic site.   I now that sounds a bit tacky but it was really good.   The best thing about it was that it has a cheetah sanctuary where you are allowed to go and pet the cheetahs, which we did.   It was excellent.   There just like big pussy cats really, only with enormous teeth and claws!!

Today we went up Table Mountain.   The queues were huge.   However, my dad is still recovering from a knee replacement and walks with a walking stick.   As soon as the officials saw him they ushered us to the front of the queue and we got straight on the cable car.   Good work dad!   As you’d expect the views from the top are spectacular and well worth a trip up there.   We fly back to Zambia tomorrow with a small mountain of stuff that we’ve bought in CT!   That should be amusing negotiating about the excess baggage!
